Great post, particularly the point about starting tournaments too soon- I may need to rethink my stock advice!
Its a fine line though, because there is also the tendency for new adult players to want to wait until everything is "just right". In thinking about it, I would say waiting until at least 1000 CHess dot level makes sense. Anyway, good stuff as always!

I think that is a really good marker. I did my first tournament at about 400 Chess.com. It was a train wreck:)
