Which is the best martial art and why?

Judo, cause u have alot more control to how much damage you will give to opponent,In karate for example u can give alot more damage than u intend with a punch or kick can cause serious damage
MMA of course.
After this, martial arts who involve competition where both opponents attack the other without restraints besides the rules of the sport (BJJ, boxing, wrestling, judo etc). Choreographied self defense like aikido or sytema won't help in a real fight scenario.

It does work very well, especially against an average guy,if u are fighting a martial artist, mma covers all sorts of martial arts from punching to grappling and ground fighting ,mma is as advanced as it can get,but that doesnt mean aikido or judo is useless,an aikido master might have a difficult time fighting an mma master but against an average guy you would be amazed with the results
Lethwei makes MMA competitions look like your 3rd grade TKD tournament
"The Art of Fighting without Fighting" I would show you some of it but there isn't enough room. :).
It's impossible to answer. It depends on what you want to do :)

I ran into that the problem with karate - I was doing kyokushin karate and had a job where I sometimes needed to get slightly physical with people to throw obnoxious drunk/crazy people off the premises. Also there was sometimes risk of let's call it fairly mild aggression from people towards me, like a bit of pushing and grabbing and such.

The karate was sadly close to useless - I couldn't like round house kick people in the head for pushing me - I'd end up in jail. So yeah, I really could have used some more low key moves lol.

Maybe a Youtube video would make you a Celeb? I'd enjoy viewing a demo.

I trick bullies into wooden boats after they offer me a fight and then tow them behind my ship. :). lol

Well, we have to clearly state what is best.

If you goals is self defense, Aikido can be pretty effective. Have you ever been exposed to self defense moves like in this video?

Believe me a friend was learning Aikido and I can tell you that if I make a clown of myself in the street like the woman in this video, if I keep asking for it I might end up at hospital's ER room.

And from my experience when I was exposed to aggression in the street or somewhere else. The idiot taking the decision to attack someone like me is not having the skills of the worst MMA fighter.

You tow the bully in water in order to keep the freshness with cold water? It's always good to keep the fish cold. Who knows that might mean a nice sashimi or ceviche!
