generalization problem.. and rule of thumbs that did not include the "pre-conditions" the board logic that would help figure out when to apply them or not. (not when but where in the position wilderness).
they worked until some plateau, and then .... what am I gonna dooooo...? I guessed from the elephant story. did not read yet.
It could also be about lack of self-awareness while developing.... (not on the board, not the pieces during a game, I mean the learner, ok, the "improver").
